This United Nations (UN) survey of crime trends in Asia and the Pacific covering the 1986-1990 period was conducted to collect national data in several countries and to strengthen cooperation among UN member states by setting the review and analysis of national crime data in a broader context.
Abstract
Data were compiled on intentional homicide, assault, robbery, rape, theft, and fraud. From 1986 to 1990, the homicide rate increased by over 23 percent, primarily in poorer countries of the region. The assault rate, however, declined by over 12 percent. The incidence of rape increased by over 12 percent between the previous survey and the 1986-1990 period, while robbery increased by about 7 percent. Significant declines were noted in theft and fraud rates. The importance of international cooperation in preventing crime is discussed, and changes in recorded crime between 1975 and 1990 are examined. 24 footnotes, 25 tables, and 17 figures
