The statistics for Great Britain in 1979 are reported; serious crime data, annual district crime figures, quarterly crime trends for districts, and annual arrest data are given.
Abstract
Serious crime data includes crimes reported to New Scotland Yard for 1979. Categories in this area include violent offenses, cases closed, theft crimes, fraud and forgery, and criminal damage and miscellaneous crime. Data on annual crime rates for districts are reported by offense, and percentages of change over the previous year are given. Crime trends for the districts are reported both by crime and by quarter for 1977, 1978, and 1979. District arrest rates are reported by type of offense; arrests by branch offices are recorded; and arrests by officer type are given. Overall, 557,378 serious crimes were recorded in 1979, representing a 2 percent drop from the previous year. Moreover, 5 percent fewer crimes were cleared during 1979 than in 1978, and juveniles accounted for a high proportion of arrests for serious crimes. The number of assaults and homicides increased during the year, whereas total robberies, burglaries, frauds, and forgeries decreased. Tabular data and graphs are provided.
