IN EXAMINING THE CORRELATES OF BURGLARY ACROSS SIX POLICE JURISDICTIONS OVER A ONE YEAR PERIOD, THE STUDY CONCLUDES THERE IS NO SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CHARACTERISTICS OF BURGLARY INCIDENTS AND OFFENDER TYPES.
Abstract
DO CERTAIN TYPES OF BURGLARS COMMIT CERTAIN TYPES OF BURGLARIES? THIS WAS THE PRINCIPAL QUESTION CONSIDERED IN THIS STUDY, BASED UPON AN ANALYSIS OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF BURGLARY OFFENSES AND OFFENDERS. A MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS WAS UNDERTAKEN TO SPECIFY RELATIONSHIPS AMONG VARIABLES, EMPLOYING A CLUSTER ANALYTIC SOLUTION TO REDUCE A MULTITUDE OF NOMINAL VARIABLES TO A MORE SIMPLE STRUCTURE SOLUTION. TYPES OF OFFENDERS WERE EXAMINED IN RELATION TO THE TYPE OF PROPERTY STOLEN AND THE AMOUNT OF FINANCIAL LOSS. TYPES OF OFFENSES WERE ALSO ANALYZED IN RELATION TO TYPE OF PROPERTY STOLEN AND THE SIZE OF THE FINANCIAL LOSS. OFFENSE/OFFENDER TYPES AND SEX OF APPREHENDED OFFENDERS, OFFENSE/OFFENDER TYPES AND DISTANCE FROM RESIDENCE TO BURGLARY SITE, AND OFFENSE/OFFENDER TYPES AND TEMPORAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OFFENSE ARE ALSO EXAMINED FOR CORRELATION. WHEN THE SEVEN OFFENSE TYPES WERE CROSS-TABULATED WITH THE EIGHT OFFENDER TYPES, SOME PATTERNS WERE SUGGESTIVE BUT NOT SUBSTANTIAL. THE RESEARCHER ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THIS STUDY ARE SUGGESTIVE BUT NOT FINAL. HE INDICATES THAT THE EXAMINATION OF BURGLARY PATTERNS OVER A PERIOD OF TIME REQUIRES LONGITUDINAL DATA WITH INFORMATION ON BOTH OFFENSE AND OFFENDER CHARACTERISTICS. HE POINTS OUT THAT EVEN DATA TO SUPPORT RESEARCH OF THE PRESENT TYPE ARE NOT GENERALLY AVAILABLE....RCB
