This report compares preliminary counts of crimes for 1996 with those of 1995 for the 70 California jurisdictions with populations of 100,000 or more.
Abstract
The data revealed that the number of index offenses decreased by 12.2 percent between 1995 and 1996. Violent crimes decreased by 10 percent and property crimes decreased by 13.3 percent. The number of homicides decreased by 18.4 percent, the number of reported forcible rapes decreased by 4.3 percent, reported robberies decreased by 10.9 percent, aggravated assaults decreased by 9.7 percent, reported burglaries decreased by 12.3 percent, and motor vehicle thefts decreased by 14.5 percent.
