Uniform Crime Reporting statistics for Alaska indicate that the total number of crime index offenses increased by 16.3 percent between 1990 and 1991.
Abstract
Among violent crimes, including murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, robbery experienced the highest increase of 53.5 percent. The only decline occurred in motor vehicle theft which dropped by 1.3 percent. Total property crime offenses, including burglary, larceny, theft, and motor vehicle theft, increased by 16 percent. Larceny and burglary increased by 19.8 percent and 13.4 percent, respectively. The 45 murders in 1991 represented an increase of 21.6 percent over 1990. Murders accounted for 1.3 percent of all violent crimes and 0.1 percent of the total crime index. The age group between 20 and 24 years had the largest number of offenders (23.8 percent). The 530 rapes in 1991 represented a 28.3-percent increase over the previous year. Rapes accounted for 15.5 percent of all violent crimes and 1.7 percent of the total crime index. A total of 643 robberies accounted for 18.9 percent of all violent crimes and 2 percent of the total crime index. The 25-29 age group accounted for the largest percentage of persons arrested for robbery (16.9 percent). The 2,192 aggravated assaults in 1991 constituted a 9.3-percent increase over 1990 and represented 64.3 percent of all violent crimes and 6.8 percent of the total crime index. The 5,510 burglaries in 1991, an increase of 13.4 percent over 1990, accounted for 19.2 percent of all property crimes and 17.2 percent of the total crime index. Forcible entry accounted for 64.3 percent of the burglaries. Detailed statistical data are provided on both offenses and offenders.
