This manual is designed to help teachers and students explore the social, financial, and moral impact of such crimes as auto theft, drinking and driving, and bicycle theft. The program should increase young people's awareness of crime and the consequences of crime to them, their families, and their communities.
Abstract
Students are presented with facts and insights about 'joyriding,' professional auto theft, drunken driving, and bicycle theft. They are encouraged to explore the consequences of becoming involved in these crimes, to take steps to protect their bicycles and cars, and to analyze the risks of drinking and driving. The principal learning technique is that of dramatic skits that involve students in simulating tough decisionmaking in the face of conflicting pressures. Because the plots were derived from authentic experiences of adolescents, the students can actively identify with the dilemmas of the characters in the skits. The skits can be read in class, produced for other classes, or video taped. The openended nature of the skits encourages students to focus on the consequences of criminal involvement. Followup questions are provided in the lesson plans to guide classroom discussion toward consideration of personal and social responsibility. In addition, articles about the crimes covered in the skits are provided. The complete kit contains this manual; three crime prevention posters; a learning poster about postaccident do's and dont's; and a bibliography of films, filmstrips, cassettes, and games. Illustrations, crossword puzzles, other games, and quizzes are included in the manual.
