This manual produced by the Virginia Crime Prevention Association presents step-by-step guidance for developing community crime prevention programs that both target youth as potential crime victims and involve youth as participants in crime prevention programs.
Abstract
The first step in marketing crime prevention services for youth is to identify the incidence of crimes in the community that involve juvenile victims. The manual suggests ways for obtaining this information. The next step is to determine the extent to which the public is aware of the scope of juvenile victimization. This can be done by researching local media coverage of the issue, determining the existence of community crime prevention programs for youth, and asking school officials about the demand for student crime prevention education. The manual then suggests how to devise a marketing plan that will make youth and their families aware of juvenile victimization and strategies that can prevent it. This includes suggestions for cataloging marketing opportunities. Suggestions for implementation strategies cover public service announcements, radio and television coverage, news releases, feature articles, and oral presentations to groups and organizations. School programs are also discussed. Descriptions of school and community crime prevention programs that both educate and involve youth are outlined. A description of State crime prevention resources and an appended listing of crime prevention program resources.
