Citizens can help stop crime by removing opportunities for criminals and by promptly reporting any suspicious activities to the police.
Abstract
Crime prevention measures practiced regularly will help to reduce crime and thus make a safer community. Suggestions are included for residential, automobile, and personal security. For example, install sufficient outdoor lighting to deter burglars and use automatic timers to turn on lights in your absence, avoid leaving notes on the arrival home, install deadbolt locks, don't give out personal information over the phone to strangers. The suggestions cover how to secure your home before going on vacation, how to act if your home is in the process of being burglarized, how to dress for shopping, and more. Recommended actions when confronted with a potential rapist or burglar are given. If an offense does occur, citizens are responsible for reporting the incident immediately and for testifying in court, if necessary.
