The Crime Prevention/Victim Services Branch of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which is the policy and operational support unit for the proactive policing program, focuses on victim services programming, community-based policing, drug awareness/education, family violence, youth, and crime prevention.
Abstract
Regarding victim services, key areas are the prompt return of stolen property, training, family violence, sexual assault victims, families of homicide victims, elderly victimization, and the coordination of volunteer services for victims. Community-based policing has been an operational model of policing in the RCMP since the 1970's. This is particularly evident in the Rural Crime Watch Program, which focuses on theft offenses in rural areas. National initiatives in the attack on drug trafficking and use include drug education and awareness programs. The RCMP has implemented a policy on spousal assault, and the force's response to this policy is being monitored. It includes the provision of shelters for battered women and referral to support services. Efforts to counter youth crime include police leadership in the provision of activities for youth. Crime prevention efforts emphasize crime analysis, police-community cooperation in program development and operation, and evaluation of program effectiveness and efficiency.
