Various activities of United Nations member states in strengthening international cooperation in crime prevention, criminal justice and the treatment of offenders and in supporting United Nations activities in these areas, are described.
Abstract
The efforts of United Nations member states to translate into action the recommendations contained in the Milan Plan of Action adopted by the Seventh United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders are reported. Activities to improve international cooperation in crime prevention and criminal justice are also described. The report also addresses the national strategies described by member states for coping with the most serious forms of crime. Organized crime and illicit drug trafficking in particular are of great concern to many members. Member states also provided input for this report on activities being conducted to improve human rights in the administration of justice. For example, Argentina is attempting to eliminate solitary confinement at the national level. A report on regional meetings that were held and other preparations underway for the Eighth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders is included. Contributions made by member states to the United Nations Trust Fund for Social Defence and their proposals for its revitalization also are detailed. Other sections of the report describe the activities of the United Nations institutes for the prevention of crime and the treatment of offenders and the development of a United Nations crime prevention and criminal justice information network.
