The 49th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly focused on strengthening the institutional capacity of the UN's Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program.
Abstract
The 49th session considered the progress made in implementing UN crime prevention and criminal justice resolutions related to such crimes as national and transnational economic crime, organized crime, environmental offenses, urban crime, juvenile delinquency, violent crime, violence against women and children, and international traffic in minors. The session also emphasized the need to efficiently manage and modernize criminal justice systems, the importance of international cooperation in crime prevention, and the need to establish and implement UN standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice. Research workshops considered extradition and international cooperation, mass media and crime prevention, urban crime prevention, violent crime prevention, environmental protection, and international cooperation in criminal justice system management. The UN General Assembly decided that the UN's Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program should offer member states practical advice and technical assistance and that the program's institutional capacity should be strengthened. 26 notes
