The Crime Prevention Coalition published its Call to Action and Foundations for Action in order to inspire community-based action to reduce the crime problems that plague the nation. The principles were developed by the 130 national, Federal, and State organizations that comprise the Coalition and the examples used to illustrate these principles were selected to represent diverse geography, problems, and solutions.
Abstract
The Crime Prevention Coalition believes that crime prevention is everyone's business, is more than security, is a responsibility of all levels of government, is linked with solving social problems, and is cost-effective. An effective crime prevention strategy requires a central position in law enforcement, community cooperation, education, consideration of local needs and conditions, and continual testing and improvement. Finally, crime prevention improves the quality of life for the community and its citizens. This report offers operational definitions of crime prevention, discusses the evolution of crime prevention as a concept and as a series of pragmatic actions, explores current programs and approaches, and identifies opportunities and challenges for the future.
