This newsletter of the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) features the proceedings of the 129th International Senior Seminar on "Crime Prevention in the 21st Century -- Effective Prevention of Crime Associated With Urbanization Based Upon Community Involvement and Prevention of Youth Crime and Juvenile Delinquency," which was held from January 11 to February 10, 2005.
Abstract
Seminar participants included 8 Japanese and 17 overseas participants. They included police officers, public prosecutors, judges, probation/parole officers, correctional officers, and other public officials. The seminar was needed because of societal changes and crime trends linked to urbanization, along with the need to assess current countermeasures and problems experienced. Among the topics covered in the seminar were effective measures for preventing crime associated with urbanization; effective measures for youth at risk of delinquency; and the role of the community in an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to urban crime. The seminar consisted of individual presentations, group workshops, and visits to relevant criminal justice agencies. Topics covered in these various seminar activities are discussed, and workshop reports are provided, along with references materials distributed to participants. Information is also provided on UNAFEI's Fifth Training Course on the Juvenile Delinquent Treatment System for Kenya, which was held October 12 to November 4, 2004. Other UNAFEI activities included in the newsletter are the Seventh International Training Course on Corruption Control in Criminal Justice, held October 18 to November 12, 2004, and the third Seminar on the Revitalization of the Volunteer Probation Aid System for the Philippines, which was held December 6-14, 2004. Information on UNAFEI's forthcoming programs is also provided.
