Data are presented on crime in Maine during 1980.
Abstract
The crime rate is based on the occurrence of an index offense per 1,000 of the State population. In 1980, the crime rate was 44.27, compared to 42.71 in 1979. Violent crime decreased by 2.6 percent, largely due to decreases in robbery and aggravated assault. Property crimes increased 3.95 percent over 1979. Burglary and larceny increased, while motor vehicle theft decreased. Police reported stolen property amounting to $19,973,333, compared to $15,105,887 in 1979. Jewelry and precious metals reflected the largest increase, with $4,003,254 being stolen in 1980 compared to $732,011 in 1979. Police recovered $7,952,212 in stolen property in 1980 (a 39.8 percent recovery). Police cleared 26.5 percent of all index crimes during 1980. A total of 43,402 arrests were made for criminal violations during the year. Of this total, 12,040 were juveniles (up to and including age 17) and 31,362 were adults. In addition to data on index crimes, statistics are provided on police employment and police assaulted. Also discussed are crime factors, potential uses of the Uniform Crime Reports, reporting procedure, verification procedure, and classification of offenses, as well as calculation of rate, percentage, and trends.
