Abstract
Crime in India increased by 1.5 percent from 1985 to 1986, with a total of about 14 million cognizable crime cases under the Indian Penal Code. The increase was mostly in murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rape, criminal breach of trust, cheating, counterfeiting, and miscellaneous offenses. Crimes of kidnapping and abduction, robbery, burglary, theft, and riots registered a decline from 1985 to 1986. There were 27,269 murder cases in 1986, 4,195 culpable homicides, 7,952 rapes, 15,667 kidnappings and abductions, 22,395 robberies, over 1 million burglaries, over 3 million thefts, 94,197 riots, 19,021 criminal breaches of trust, 22,579 cheating cases, and 1,687 counterfeiting cases. Of over 17 million cases investigated by the police, 81.6 percent were cleared. About 29 million cases were in the courts for trial, and 75 percent remained pending trial at the end of the year. Of cases in which trials were completed, 49 percent resulted in conviction. Tables and figures
