The research reported here is part of a much wider study into crime and the leisure industry and tourism. There is a brief discussion of the general problem of crime in the work place, but the emphasis is on the extent and type of crime in small holiday accommodation units.
Abstract
Studies on crime in the work place have shown that some occupations are more prone to physical and verbal violence (e.g., security guards), others more to theft (e.g., women working as bar staff or housekeepers), others were particularly vulnerable to all three (e.g., entertainment managers). There is also a range of studies which focus on violence against staff in different types of work places. However, it is clear that academics and business personnel are only beginning to consider the extent and impact of crime at work. The trend should be towards the study of crime in specific industries and working environments. This study focuses on crime in a part of the leisure industry -- small holiday accommodation units. There are sections on (1) Verbal and Physical Abuse of Staff and of Clients; (2) Reactions to Abuse: (3) Damage to Premises; and (4) Thefts: Clients Leaving Without Paying; Bouncing Checks and Fraud; Thefts from Units and Action Taken; Staff Dishonesty and Action Taken; Thefts from Staff and Clients and Action Taken.
