STATISTICAL STUDY OF 112 GIRLS BETWEEN 23 AND 27 ARRESTED BY THE POLICE IN HAMBURG IN TERMS OF THEIR SOCIAL BACKGROUNDS AND ATTITUDES, WITH CONCLUSIONS REGARDING SPECIAL ASPECTS OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR BY FEMALES.
Abstract
RESPONSES BY A CONTROL GROUP OF 125 GIRLS WHO HAD NOT BEEN ARRESTED WERE INCLUDED. THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED BY MEANS OF PERSONAL INTERVIEWS. ALL GIRLS WERE ASKED AND RESPONDED TO THE SAME SET OF QUESTIONS. SPECIAL EMPHASIS WAS PLACED ON OBTAINING ADMISSIONS TO PREVIOUSLY UNREPORTED CRIME. AMONG OTHER THINGS, ANALYSIS OF THE STATISTICS OBTAINED INDICATED THAT WOMEN DO NOT COMMIT MANY FEWER OFFENSES THAN MEN (ALTHOUGH THE TYPES OF OFFENSE DIFFER) BUT THAT THEY ARE LESS LIKELY TO RECEIVE OFFICIAL PUNISHMENT FOR THEM. ANALYSIS ALSO INDICATED THAT WOMEN FROM THE MIDDLE CLASS COMMIT AS MANY OFFENSES AS THOSE FROM THE LOWER CLASS BUT THAT THEY ARE LESS LIKELY TO BE PUNISHED FOR THEM. --IN GERMAN
