The author urges adoption of a 'new criminology' which would link the study of crime with the larger pursuit of social justice and thus aid in the struggle for human liberation from various forms of social oppression.
Abstract
The criminal justice system is seen as suppressing dissent and preventing social change. As such, it is an instrument of the powerful ruling class. A brief history of the rule of crime and privilege in the development of penal philosophy and practice is presented. Excerpts of the political writings of several individuals thought by the author to be struggling against this system, such as Angela Davis and Eldridge Cleaver, are included.
