AN EXPOSITION OF THE EMOTIONAL AND INTELLECTUAL ATTITUDES OF THE CRIMINAL, TOGETHER WITH THE INTERPLAY OF THE INDIVIDUAL OFFENDER WITH HIS SOCIETY.
Abstract
THE CRIMINAL IS VIEWED AS ONE WHO IS UNABLE TO SATISFY BASIC EMOTIONAL AND BIOLOGICAL NEEDS WITHIN THE LAWS AND MORES OF SOCIETY WHICH THEN SETS HIM IN A DEFENSIVE POSTURE TOWARD THE RESTRICTIVE STRUCTURE THAT JUDGES AND DEMEANS HIS BEHAVIOR. WITHIN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM PSYCHIATRY IS SEEN AS THE MEANS FOR UNDERSTANDING AND ATTEMPTING TO REVISE CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR. THE WORK OF PIONEERS IN CRIMINOLOGY IS DISCUSSED. THE INDIVIDUAL CRIMINAL IS DISCUSSED UNDER THE GENERAL HEADINGS OF THE PSYCHOPATHIC PERSONALITY, EMOTIONAL IMMATURITY, AND THE NEUROTIC OFFENDER. TREATMENT PROGRAMS IN PENAL INSTITUTIONS AND PSYCHOTHERAPY OF THE INDIVIDUAL OFFENDER ARE DISCUSSED. NEUROTIC MECHANISMS IN BURGLARY AND ROBBERY, LARCENY, ARSON, AGGRESSIVE CRIMES AND IN FEMALE OFFENDERS ARE DISCUSSED.
