Crime in Northumbria in England declined by 7.2 percent from 1987 to 1988, reflecting the efforts of both the police and the public; in addition, the detection rate increased by 0.7 percent to 44.2 percent.
Abstract
The reduction in burglaries that began in 1987 continued in 1988. Unfortunately, crimes of violence against the person increased 7.3 percent. Thirty-four percent of the victims were males between ages 17 and 29, and alcohol was often a contributory factor to violence. However, violent crimes represented only 3 to 4 percent of all recorded crime. Specialized efforts to address crime were provided during 1988 by the following squads and units: the Drug Squad, Crime Intelligence, Crown Court Liaison Department, Serious Incident Squad, Child Protection Units, Stolen Vehicle Examination Section, Fraud and Commercial Squad, Special Branch, and the Regional Crime Squad.
