This volume describes sources of official and unofficial statistics on crime, criminals, and the criminal justice system in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.
Abstract
For police-recorded offenses, the text cites relevant data sources and breaks down data from each source according to specific topics (classification and counting rules, recording problems, etc.). Data descriptions discuss how the statistical tables and graphs are organized, what information they include, and how to find information using the source. The text does the same for other subjects, including cautions, court proceedings, public and police prosecutions, appeals, known offenders, probation and aftercare, prison populations, Crown court administration, legal aid, juvenile and mentally disordered offenders, victim compensation, and fugitive extradition. A discussion of reporting methods in the British Isles suggests possible improvements in statistical representation of criminal justice topics. A 'quick reference list' and key to publications are supplied, along with a subject index and 75-item bibliography. Appendixes include sample police forms, relevant provisions of the Criminal Justice Act and the Criminal Law Act, and lists of offenses under specific statutes.
