DESCRIPTION OF AN ALTERNATIVE NONRESIDENTIAL ACADEMIC AND BEHAVIORAL-SOCIAL PROGRAM CREATED FOR MALE JUVENILE PAROLEES EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTY IN REINTEGRATING INTO SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY AFTER INSTITUTIONAL RELEASE.
Abstract
A COMPREHENSIVE DESCRIPTION OF THE JUVENILE'S ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, AND BEHAVIORAL NEEDS IS PROVIDED. THESE YOUTHS, AGED 15 TO 18 YEARS, HAVE EXPERIENCED LOW ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, FEELINGS OF POWERLESSNESS AND LACK OF CONTROL OVER DESTINY, LOW SELF ESTEEM, AMBIVALENCE TOWARD AUTHORITY, AND ANXIETY OVER VIRILITY. THE CURRICULUM DESIGN OF THE PROGRAM IS SIMILAR TO REGULAR SCHOOL OFFERINGS. A QUASI-BEHAVIOR-MODIFICATION SYSTEM OPERATES BY MONETARILY REINFORCING SCHOOL ATTENDANCE, ACADEMIC AND BEHAVIORAL PERFORMANCE, AND ADJUSTMENT. COUNSELING SERVICES AND GROUP DISCUSSIONS ARE ALSO PROVIDED. A DESCRIPTION OF THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPED BETWEEN STAFF AND THE JUVENILES IS INCLUDED. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT THE CREGIER OUTPOST HAS BEEN QUITE SUCCESSFUL SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN SEPTEMBER 1970. RECIDIVISM FOR THE PERIOD OF SEPTEMBER 1970 THROUGH JANUARY 1974 WAS ONLY 14 PERCENT, WHILE ATTENDANCE ALWAYS EXCEEDED 69 PERCENT. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
