Opera and other art forms may represent an approach to alleviating problems in English prisons and rehabilitating inmates.
Abstract
Creativity can represent a way of helping inmates deal with personal conflicts, confront death, and hope for a better world. It can encourage respect, trust, an acceptance of shared values, and a common humanity. The field of arts in prisons is growing, and art activities such as opera and music can involve inmates directly in both production and performance. The art work of inmates can provide insights as to what they think is significant. Through art, inmates can obtain mutual support from each other and improve relations with staff and other correctional officials. Inmates themselves indicate that expressing creativity through art is valuable. Art in prisons should be encouraged, and the independence of artists should be ensured. The expression of creativity in art by inmates can change them for the better.
