The Creative Interventions Alcohol Awareness Program developed by Appleton and Katz is based on Bandura's social learning theory and represents an innovative and effective treatment program for people with multiple arrests for driving while intoxicated.
Abstract
The program began in 1979, has had more than 500 participants, and currently involves 6 groups of approximately 15 members each. Their recidivism in terms of rearrests over a 5-year period is less than 1 percent. The program uses behavioral techniques to help members acquire effective interpersonal skills. Behavioral change is fostered by a gestalt orientation, cognitive restructuring, and experimentation with 11 specifically defined behaviors. The particularly difficult problem of measuring the effect of a program has been incorporated into the learning process, with observable behaviors providing group leaders and participants with a sound basis for evaluation. 12 references.
