This workshop training module has been designed to prepare participants to begin the dialog, form the alliances, and build the "bridges" for enlisting community resources in the design and implementation of community corrections.
Abstract
Following an orientation session that includes determining what participants hope to gain from the 5- to 5 1/2-hour workshop, a "brainstorming" session is conducted with the group on the various sectors that compose a community. The points to be made through this exercise are that the effectiveness of any outreach activity will depend on identifying which segments of the community the outreach efforts should target and that it is useful to identify a person from the targeted sector for an initial contact and advice on how best to proceed. Participants are then introduced to an exercise that will help them look at their agencies' attitudes relative to community outreach. Five steps are then provided to guide participants as they plan any community outreach project. They are as follows: determine the project; brainstorm the methods available; prepare the organization; engage the community; keep participants involved and productive; and respect the process. Participants are then guided in the design of a community outreach plan for their agencies. Detailed instructions are provided to the instructor, and handouts for participants are provided.
