'Sentenced to Read' is a Kentucky juvenile justice program designed to identify learning disabled juvenile offenders and teach them to read.
Abstract
'Sentenced to Read' is a court ordered, structured disposition implemented by a trained paraprofessional. It includes diagnosis of learning deficiencies, one-on-one instruction in basic skills through General Educational Development, employability skills training, and try-out employment. The program is funded by the Job Training Partnership Act Private Industry Councils under the Exemplary Youth Section for targeted population. Since its inception, the program has spread throughout eastern, central, and northeastern Kentucky, and it has received two national awards.
