This report examines offenders sentenced and committed to Massachusetts county jails and houses of correction during 1976-83 for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI).
Abstract
During the study period, DUI commitments increased from 46 in 1976 to 2,372 in 1983. The new drunk driving law resulted in a 173 percent increase in commitments. An increasing percentage of the commitments to county facilities are offenders committed for DUI, and each county has had an increase in DUI commitments since the new law was enacted. Almost half of the commitments received a sentence of less than 1 month from 1976 to 1983. Offenders committed for DUI are older, married or previously married, more educated, and serve shorter sentences compared to the remainder of the county commitments. Tabular data are provided.
