This volume presents national and State-by-State statistics and narrative summaries regarding prison and jail inmates, probationers, parolees, correctional facilities, correctional personnel, and programs and services, as well as data on corrections in Canada and on the individual jurisdictions with largest corrections systems.
Abstract
The data covers adult prisons and jail systems, including new and planned construction, as well as privately operated prisons in 21 States, Puerto Rico, and Australia. The information includes the numbers and characteristics of inmates on January 1, 1998; the incarceration rates per 100,000 citizens; inmates who were not United States citizens; inmates ages 50 and older; inmate escapes and captures during 1997; and inmate deaths. Other statistics focus on inmate assaults, AIDS in correctional facilities, the average length of stay, numbers and security levels of adult correctional institutions, facility capacities, correctional agency budgets and costs per inmate per day in 1997, and health care costs. Further statistics describe prison industries; other inmate programs; staff numbers, characteristics, and salaries; probationers and parolees; electronic monitoring; shock incarceration programs; and characteristics of privately operated correctional facilities. The data were compiled from a survey questionnaire mailed to State and Federal corrections agencies in the United States and the Correctional Service of Canada, to probation and parole agencies in the Untied States and the Canadian National Parole Board, and to jail systems in the United States with more than 200 inmates. Additional data were collected by means of follow-up telephone calls. Figures, tables, glossary, and index
