This document presents statistical data regarding the inmates, institutions, budgets, and programs of State and Federal correctional systems in the United States and Canada on January 1, 1993, based on a survey of all these correctional systems.
Abstract
The United States had 824,901 inmates in State and Federal correctional facilities on January 1, 1993, an increase of 6.3 percent over the preceding years. The Federal Bureau of Prisons held 8.7 percent of the inmates. Rates of incarceration ranged from 503 per 100,000 population in Louisiana to 87 in Minnesota; the national rate was 343 per 100,000. The statistics cover admissions and releases, escapes, inmate assaults, inmate fatalities, AIDS in correctional facilities, death row inmates, the numbers and types of correctional institutions, correctional industries, inmate programs, shock incarceration programs, inmate drug treatment, correctional employment and expenditures, correctional personnel salaries, and other topics.
