A paper presented to a French meeting on corrections institutions describes the role of various types of training required for corrections personnel.
Abstract
The importance of training for corrections personnel has been emphasized by the broadened mission of corrections officers (i.e., security and resocialization) and by the expansion of the prison system to accommodate the growing prison population. Training may take between 2 months and 2 years, but the average training time falls below the desirable minimum of 6 months. A fundamental goal of training is to enable prison personnel to work on teams with various other types of prison personnel. Specific work descriptions are provided for management personnel, guards and wardens, administrative officers, technical personnel charged with professional training of prisoners, and educators/probation officers. Other personnel types listed include consultants for administrative commissions, social service officers, and physicians. A summary of the discussion following the presentation focuses on the conflict inherent in the security/rehabilitation mission of guards.
