This text presents an overview of the history and current nature of corrections in the United States, correctional law, the characteristics of offenders, correctional systems and their administration, inmate services, community-based corrections, juvenile corrections, and impending issues in corrections.
Abstract
Individual chapters focus on the nature and extent of crime; crime control strategies; and the historical relationship among punishment, incarceration, and corrections. Additional chapters explain the use of jails and short-term detention, inmate characteristics, the Federal and State correctional systems, corrections management, and services and rehabilitation programs for offenders. Further chapters discuss inmate social structure, the effects of incarceration, inmate violence, sexual behavior and contraband in prison society, probation and parole, and correctional institutions and programs for female offenders.
