For this report, 37 States and the Federal Bureau of Prisons provided data on corrections budget proposals for 1992-1993.
Abstract
This report provides data about budget requests submitted by the Department of Corrections (DOC) in 37 States and the Federal Bureau of Prisons for 1992-1993. It includes information about the increased number of employees, new facilities and new beds that are provided for in the budget proposals. Information about new prison programs and alternatives to prison that are being considered is also included. The total budget of $19.28 billion needed to support corrections operations and construction for all reporting agencies is almost double what it was five years ago. Construction costs account for $3.96 billion of this total. In four States and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, budget requests exceed a billion dollars. The proposed budgets would add 23,858 new corrections employees nationwide, 112 new facilities and 75,711 new beds. Many States report that alternatives to prison are being considered. Among these are programs to divert drug abusers, intensive supervision, electronic monitoring, boot camp, shock probation, day reporting and half-way back programs. 2 graphs, 2 charts
