RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF CORRECTIONAL POSITIONS UNDERTAKEN TO COMPARE EXISTING SALARY RANGES THROUGHOUT THE SOUTHEAST REGION OF THE U.S.A. AND TO PROVIDE DATA ON THREE REPRESENTATIVE STATES OUTSIDE THE SOUTHEAST.
Abstract
THE CORRECTIONAL RESEARCH AND EVALUATION CENTER AT THE STATE TECHNICAL INSTITUTE IN MEMPHIS, (TN), CONDUCTED A POSITION AND SALARY SURVEY OF ELEVEN STATE DEPARTMENTS OF CORRECTIONS TO DETERMINE THE SALARY RANGES FOR SELECTED POSITIONS. THE SALARY DIFFERENTIALS WERE COMPARED WITHIN THE SOUTHEAST REGION AND WERE ALSO CONTRASTED WITH THOSE IN THREE STATES REPRESENTING THE WEST, THE NORTH CENTRAL, AND NORTHEAST REGIONS. DATA ON MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM SALARIES FOR EACH POSITION WAS OBTAINED BY MEANS OF A TELEPHONE SURVEY. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THERE WERE GREATER DIFFERENCES AMONG CLASSIFICATIONS THAN FOR INDIVIDUAL POSITIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, SALARIES FOR CUSTODIAL POSITIONS WERE MORE COMPARABLE WITHIN THE SOUTHEAST REGION THAN SALARIES FOR TREATMENT POSITIONS. BASED ON CURRENT LABOR STATISTICS, SALARY CONTRAST ACROSS GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS WAS EXPECTED TO REFLECT HIGHER ENTRY LEVEL SALARIES AND HIGHER MAXIMUM LEVEL SALARIES OUTSIDE THE SOUTHEAST. THE DATA SUPPORTED THESE EXPECTATIONS IN ALL POSITIONS EXCEPT TWO - CHAPLAINS IN ALABAMA AND PHYSICIANS IN NORTH CAROLINA, WHERE THE MAXIMUM SALARIES EXCEEDED THOSE IN ALL STATES PARTICIPATING. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT THIS MAY BE MORE REFLECTIVE OF THE VALUE SYSTEM OF A PARTICULAR AREA THAN OF REGIONAL ECONOMIC FACTORS USED TO COMPILE CURRENT LABOR REPORTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...DMC
