Abstract

Introductory tables cover the number of adults on probation, in jail, in prison, or on parole and their percent of the adult population for 1989 as well as the estimated number of adults on probation, in jail, in prison, or on parole and their percent of the adult population by sex and race for 1989. Data on jail inmates address 1-day counts and average daily population by legal status and sex, conviction status by sex for 1988 and 1989, demographic characteristics, annual admissions and releases, and jail capacity and occupancy. Six tables pertain to jurisdictions with large jail populations. Probation statistics cover number of probationers, probation status, supervision status, probationers entering and leaving probation, demography, offense type, and intensive supervision and electronic monitoring. Tables for prison inmates address the number of inmates by sentence length, prisoners under State or Federal jurisdiction, and type of release. Parolee statistics pertain to parole characteristics, number, supervision status, adults entering and leaving parole, demography, sentence length, and intensive supervision and electronic monitoring.
