In this compilation of the Bureau of Justice Statistics, statistics describe persons under some form of correctional supervision. The report provides a convenient source for data about persons present in all sectors of correctional population. The Bureau of Justice Statistics is designed to make readily apparent the links between different correctional institutions or methods in each State, suggest the similarities and differences between States and regions as our system of criminal justice responds to both common and disparate needs, and permit comparisons with previous years' statistics. This feature includes a section devoted to youth in long-term, State-operated juvenile facilities.
