This four-part self-instructional course for correctional officers covers basic concepts, inmate supervision, security procedures, and the management of inmates with special problems.
Abstract
Part 1 presents a historical overview of crime and punishment and the evolution of current corrections philosophies. Correctional officer duties are explored, and correctional law is interpreted in relation to correctional officers' duties and responsibilities. Part 2 of the course teaches the fundamentals of inmate supervision, with attention to communication, controlling behavior, discipline, and the report writing. Part 3, which addresses security procedures, presents security principles and procedures for contraband identification and control, searches, counting inmates, key and tool control, and patrol. Part 4 considers officers' handling of inmates with special medical or behavioral problems. Particular attention is given to diabetic, epileptic, and mentally ill inmates as well as to inmates who are suicidal, abuse drugs and alcohol, and engage in homosexual acts.
