This resource guide for correctional officers contains 18 brief chapters dealing with the general role of the correctional officer and specific duties associated with inmate management.
Abstract
Following an overview of the criminal justice system and the corrections role within it, the responsibilities and training of corrections officers are reviewed. Another chapter outlines legal issues in corrections and suggests ways to reduce the possibility of litigation. A discussion of inmate supervision encompasses issuing orders, observing inmates, support of the treatment program, and the supervision of housing units and work details. Security and control procedures to be followed by correctional officers are detailed, along with the use of unarmed defense, firearms, and gas equipment. Chapters also address safety and emergency procedures, inmate rules and discipline, special problem inmates, and inmate classification and reception. Inmate programming, parole and release preparation, as well as public relations and citizens involvement are discussed in separate chapters. The correctional officer's role in providing various prison services is reviewed. The services covered are communication, mail, visiting, food service, sanitation and hygiene, as well as medical and health care services. The Code of Ethics of the American Correctional Association and a subject index are appended. 57 references.
