The Correctional Investigator, who investigates complaints and problems of inmates in Canadian penitentiaries, notes that 1,375 complaints were handled with assistance given for 19 percent of these.
Abstract
Complaints for the year fell into these categories: (1) allegations of unfair treatment by the disciplinary court; (2) charges that personal property had been unjustly confiscated; (3) displeasure with the quality of food served and with the time of meals; (4) discrimination involving compensation for injury; (5) transfer to another institution; (6) security problems; (7) claims procedures; (8) access to information; and (9) suspension of inmate's rights. Tables present statistics concerning complaints received by category, by month, by institution, and by region; institutional visits; disposition of complaints; and complaints resolved or assisted. Recommendations given to the Correctional Service of Canada are included.
