The article examines the problem of educators in correctional facilities who are not being trained how to teach in a prison and presents a brief synthesis of the current correctional education programs around the United States.
Abstract
The problem of prison educators not being prepared to teach in a prison setting arises from most of them being trained only in content areas, not in correctional education. The article briefly examines relevant literature, ranging from 1930 to 1990, on the subject of inservice training programs needed and provided for correctional educators. The current efforts, organized by the CEA, attempt to provide staff training to correctional educators on a national basis through interactive video teleconferencing. Other efforts include developing a curriculum for correctional staff and including correctional education in college teacher preparation curricula. Suggestions for the future in correctional educators' training is reviewed and a brief synthesis/annotation of the current correctional education programs around the United States, divided by CEA region, concludes the article. 12 references
