This self-study guide to help persons prepare for corrections officer application exams provides sample practice examinations, information on duties and job knowledge, and exam practice and preparation.
Abstract
The manual is intended to help the student (1) gain familiarity with correctional officer examinations; (2) improve general test-taking skill; (3) improve skill in analyzing and answering questions involving reasoning, judgment, and comparison, and evaluation; and (4) improve speed and skill in reading and understanding what is read. Five sample practice examinations and a final practice examination are provided, using questions from actual correction officer tests. In the section on duties and job knowledge, the duties of the corrections officer are outlined, and a glossary of drug terms is provided. Also included are general judgment and reasoning questions, judgment in law enforcement decisionmaking, judgment problems for the corrections officer, and probation and correction terminology. Laws, terms, and procedures in police work are also discussed. In the concluding section, guidance is provided on increasing reading speed and understanding, and reading tests are provided in the subject areas of State correction law and State penal law. Attention is also given to developing the skills of report writing, coding ability, following instructions from tables and charts, observation, and arithmetic computations.
