Focusing on the auto, oil, pharmaceutical, and defense industries, some of which are in the prestigious Fortune 500, this book discusses the disparity between the actual crime and misconduct of corporations and their glowing public image.
Abstract
Issues discussed are the growth of corporate power and abuses pertaining to corporate power, the democratic process in the political arena, workers and the local community, stockholders, the consumer, the environment, and the Third World. Separate chapters cover corporate violence and corporate bribery. Offenses discussed range from the illegal disposition of hazardous waste to defiance of health and safety standards as well as price-fixing. The magnitude of the injurious impact of corporate corruption is documented and compared with the cost of "street" crime. Recommendations regarding countermeasures for corporate corruption pertain to self-regulation, stronger enforcement, stiffer corporate penalties, the conviction and imprisonment of top corporate executives, the publicizing of corporate misbehavior, an increased consumer role, a Federal corporate charter, control of corporate size, and the international control of transnationals. Chapter notes, 63 references, subject index.
