The first course in a series on school violence and vandalism prevention details planning and evaluative processes that participants can use to implement programs in their own schools and communities.
Abstract
The educational program was designed for all persons involved with schools that are experiencing incidents of violence and property loss. The first course consists of six sessions, ranging between 1 and 2 hours each. In the introductory workshop, the course objectives are discussed, and participants identify problems in their communities and preventive strategies which have been useful. Subsequent classes concentrate on individual stages of the planning process, beginning with techniques to build awareness of school problems through community relations and collection of relevant data. The third session identifies four steps in formulating an action plan: clarifying the problem, setting goals, establishing priorities, and defining constraints and resources. Writing objectives and planning tasks to accomplish these goals are covered in the fourth meeting, followed by a session on evaluation in which class members analyze a performance report on a project designed to combat school violence and vandalism. The final session reviews the planning process. In addition, participants develop recommendations for programs suitable for their own schools or communities. Using a simulated school incident, class groups attempt to resolve a school problem. For each session, an agenda with suggested time limits is provided, along with transparencies, worksheets, and background materials such as articles, statistical data, reports from other programs, and charts. An annotated bibliography of audiovisual materials, including fees and distributors, is appended. For courses two to seven, see NCJ 69750-55. For the Trainer's Guide, see NCJ 69756-62.
