A former law enforcement officer relates a true story of crime and corruption in the Pacific Northwest.
Abstract
In 1954, a band of long-time western Canadian bank robbers struck a bank in Seattle, WA. One responding police officer was fatally shot, and two others were permanently disabled. All three robbers escaped and returned to Vancouver, Canada to continue their criminal activities. A subsequent 10-year investigation revealed a vast network of corruption among police and elected officials. The Vancouver police chief and others were participating in a scheme to protect several hard-core criminals. Upon disclosure, the chief fled the country to escape prosecution, one high- ranking officer committed suicide, and a detective attempted suicide. Three hundred Seattle police officers were indicted. The case was never finally resolved, primarily because of more than a dozen corrupt City of Vancouver Police officers and Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers, as well as some British Columbia politicians and judges.
