This report to the U.S. House Subcommittee on Government Information, Justice, and Agriculture summarizes a 1985 Justice, and Agriculture summarizes a 1985 General Accounting Office study of whether or not State and local law enforcement officials perceive that they are overburdencd with federally referred criminal cases, causing meritorious cases to go unprosecuted.
Abstract
The study plotted the subcommittee's 1982 law enforcement survey questionnaire to determine whether there are any geographic patterns in the distribution of data supplied by State and local law enforcement officials regarding federally referred criminal cases. It also determined the availability of data on Federal investigative and prosecutive caseloads and dispositions and rates of referral to State and local law enforcement agencies. State and local police, sheriffs, and prosecutors were surveyed to determine whether they were overburdened with federally referred cases. There were no geographic patterns in response distributions, and there were no relevant data on case referrals by Federal agencies. Most officials surveyed did not perceive being overburdened by Federal case referrals.
