This report presents data on New Zealand criminal court proceedings and sentencing during the period 1986 to 1995.
Abstract
The Criminal Justice Amendment Act 1993 introduced several changes to the criminal justice system, two of which are described in this report: the use of suspended imprisonment sentences in the period August to October 1995, and the use of reparation as a sentence over the period 1991 to 1995. The report also discusses another special topic, changes in judges' perceptions of the seriousness of some offenses between the mid-1980s and the early 1990s in terms of the use of custodial sentences. The report includes data on: (1) prosecutions, convictions and sentencing of all offenses, including traffic offenses; (2) young offenders; (3) custodial and community-based sentences; (4) suspended prison sentences; (5) changes in the seriousness of offending; (6) reparation as a sentence; and (7) summary of main findings.
