The U.S. Comptroller General reviewed statistical indicators of the national drug abuse situation including the prevalence of drug abuse, the health effects of drug abuse, and the availability of illegal drugs.
Abstract
This report discusses the prevalence of illegal drug abuse in the 1980's focusing on cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and other dangerous drugs. Local perspectives of the drug problem in Washington, DC; New York; Miami; Chicago; Los Angeles; and San Francisco are examined. The report outlines Federal drug control efforts aimed at reducing drug supply and drug demand. Issues in managing Federal drug control efforts touch on the need for measures of program effectiveness, increased interagency cooperation, and strengthened leadership and central oversight. 2 appendixes
