Abstract
The textbook contains seven chapters, the first two of which cover the origins and development of the police and policing. The focus is on police management, police efficiency and effectiveness, police recruits, and the police culture. Subsequent chapters deal with critical decisions and processes in criminal courts, the history of prisons (reform, repression, and rehabilitation), penal policies, prisons and the contested nature of punishment, and the politics and practice of juvenile justice. The final chapter examines the community and crime prevention, with emphasis on strategies related to offenders, victims, the environment, and the community.
