These statistics summarize immigration control in the United Kingdom for the first half of 1992, comparing the figures to those from the period between 1989 and 1991. The report covers information on acceptances for settlement by category and nationality, admissions to the United Kingdom prior to settlement, entry clearance applications in the Indian sub-continent, and enforcement actions pursued under the 1971 Immigration Act.
Abstract
The analysis found that acceptances for settlement in the United Kingdom between July 1991 and June 1992 totaled 50,900, a decrease of 2,300 from the previous 12 months, but 4,900 more than the low in 1987. These figures reflect a slowdown in the rate of application processing, caused by more intensive consideration of certain spouse cases. While 27 percent of the acceptances were from the Indian sub-continent, 20 percent were from the rest of Asia, 17 percent from Africa, and 14 percent from the Americas. In the Indian sub-continent, the number of applications from children fell, but there was a continuing increase in applications from husbands, 45 percent of which were refused. There were 49,100 work permit holders and dependents admitted during the reporting period. The implementation of more effective procedures for detecting illegal immigrants resulted in 6,100 departures from the United Kingdom, an increase of more than 1,200 from the previous 12 months. 6 figures, 15 tables, and 15 notes
