Abstract
Volunteers from the Lantana Correctional Institution (LNCI) in Florida participated in the study. A classic Solomon Four-Group Experimental Design was used. Subjects were thoroughly examined and completed the HOD test Food Frequency Questionnaire, and Symptomology Examination. Subjects were divided into two groups, according to their scores. One group previously maintained a high refined carbohydrate diet and had an excessive number of hypoglycemic symptoms. The other group previously maintained a low refined carbohydrate diet with few hypoglycemic systems. These two groups were then divided into control and experimental groups, yielding four groups. The experiment itself consisted of a special meal plan administered to the experimental groups for 1 month. The meal plan was specifically designed for the treatment of hypoglycemia with the assistance of a nutritionist, dietician, and literature resources. The control groups maintained the conventional meal plan normally supplied by the institution. At the end of 1 month, the subjects were again appraised for behavioral disturbances using the HOD test. Directions for future research are recommended. Study data and instruments, references, and a bibliography are provided.
