Psychological pre-employment screening of police force applicants should be based on more general principles for pre- employment interviewing.
Abstract
These principles are set by legislatures, courts, and police departments, and may be validated or rejected through applicants who claim to be victims of unfair selection practices. Because interviews are being held to the same standards as other pre- employment procedures, police agencies have been forced to document both interviewer and interviewee behavior. These steps should make interviews equal to the predictive powers of actuarial, objective tests. Some of the issues discussed here include interviewer conduct, reliability and validity of interviews, applicants' reliance on minimization and denial techniques, integrity interviews, and legal considerations arising from police psychological recommendations. 34 references
